Rainbow Obsidian Butterfly

This piece was found during the final hours of the Tucson Gem Show.

It was already dark outside, vendors were packing up, and Christian and I were still standing there with the flashlights on our phones searching through Rainbow Obsidian to find the pieces with the strongest flashes and the most color.

To make the story even more ridiculous, I was about a month pregnant at the time. We had just eaten quesadillas from a food truck and spent the evening hoping we wouldn’t end up needing to sprint for a bathroom while continuing our very serious mission of finding the best Rainbow Obsidian we could get our hands on.

What amazed me most was what happened after we got home.

The colors were beautiful under our phone lights in Tucson, but once we unpacked everything and started photographing everything properly, we realized the flashes were even more colorful than we originally thought.

Rainbow Obsidian has always fascinated me because it doesn’t immediately reveal its secrets. At first glance it appears dark and understated. Then the light shifts and suddenly hidden layers of color begin to appear.

That’s exactly why we spent so much time searching through piece after piece after piece after dark.

This was one of the pieces that made us stop searching.
