I’ll be honest.
The first thing that got me was his toes.
Look at them.
They’re ridiculously cute.
I had never even heard of Duality Chalcedony before coming across this carving, but the second I saw this little guy I didn’t care what the material was. I was already sold.
One thing I love about Starborn carvings is that they always seem to bring their animals to life, and this hippo is no exception.
The wrinkles.
The expression.
The stance.
The tiny little toes.
It feels less like a carving and more like someone shrunk a real hippo down and turned it into stone.
The material itself is beautiful, with soft gray, cream, and smoky tones flowing throughout the carving, but for me this piece was all about the craftsmanship.
It’s adorable.
It’s realistic.
And every time I look at it, those little hippo toes make me smile.
