Every once in a while I buy a piece because the material is special.
Every once in a while I buy a piece because of the craftsmanship.
This is one of those pieces.
Atlantisite is already not a material I come across very often in carvings of this size, but what immediately caught my attention was the level of detail.
Every square inch of this dragon has been carved.
The scales.
The teeth.
The whiskers.
The flowing mane.
The texture.
The movement.
No part of this carving was treated as an afterthought.
The longer you look at it, the more details you notice. At some point it stops feeling like a carving and starts feeling like somebody sat down and decided to create a masterpiece.
Honestly, I was impressed before I even looked at the stone itself.
I was impressed by the craftsmanship.
Pieces like this are a reminder that carving is an art form all on its own, and finding that level of workmanship in a substantial piece of Atlantisite makes it even more special.
